Diane Keaton, Goldi Hawn and Bette Midler star in this hugely successful movie based on the novel by Olivia Goldsmith. Three former college friends are brought back together by the suicide of the fourth member of their old college gang, whose husband had recently left her for a younger women. The three survivors take elaborate revenge on their own ageist ex-husbands. While the premise sounds grim, and while the movie contains a serious message, this film is funny, well written, poignant, and skillfully acted. It’s also a great example of the power of three: Other movies that feature a trio of powerful women include The Witches of Eastwick (Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon), and 9 to 5 (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton).
